I was grateful to attend 2 Acumen gatherings in SF last week. Breaking bread with other partners who have supported Acumen's decades of work was truly a highlight and a reminder why The Valerian Fund supports Acumen.
At TVF, we invest upstream in women’s health and rights across the lifecycle, where climate change is already reshaping who gets care and who doesn’t. We see women as architects of resilience, and midwives and community health workers as essential climate-resilience infrastructure. Acumen’s approach of patient capital, moral leadership, and building with the communities most affected reflects the systems-change thinking our work depends on.
I was deeply moved by the stories of Acumen Fellows Suhani Jalota and Carolina Gaitán Montoya, who shared the work they are building with entrepreneurs around the world. Their stories grounded the evening in what becomes possible when innovation and human dignity go hand in hand.
I left both rooms with a true sense of connection, hope, possibility, and a willingness to imagine new ways forward at a moment of profound challenge to human dignity.
As a funder working where climate and health meet, I left energized, and convinced that the solutions we need are already being built by people closest to the problems. Our job is to back them.
